The History of Kanuka Tea

Kanuka Tea Beginnings

Founder of Kanuka Tea, John Hesler, always had a passion for tea. Having worked for many years in the construction industry, tea was his tipple of choice although at the time this was more of the classic ‘builders’ tea variety. One Christmas he received a very sophisticated kettle and John decided his tea should match the kettle in sophistication. So John started trying out new varieties of loose leaf teas from around the world, experimenting with different strengths and flavours.

So began a journey of discovery. With the help of his mother-in-law and wife Beth, they set about researching, tasting and discovering different blends of tea. It was within a year of tea drinking heaven the hard work started and John set up his very own tea brand, Kanuka Tea.

John and his family decided on the name ‘Kanuka’, which originates from a tree native to Australia and New Zealand, renowned for its health properties. The name ‘Kanuka’ reminded them of Manuka honey, which also has well-documented health associations, and they wanted to make this a clear message about their brand ethos.

A Tea House is Born

Kanuka Tea now boasts its very own tea house in St Albans, Hertfordshire, as well as an online store. The Kanuka concept is very different to your standard coffee or tea shop.  A visit to Kanuka Tea will tantalise your senses and tempt your taste buds with a choice of over 40 loose leaf teas, which can be viewed, smelled and sampled in the unique tea wall. Here you can also learn about the origins of each tea and how best to enjoy the unique blends. For John and his family, it was really important that their customers could sample before they buy and spend time indulging and choosing from the vast array of teas available in the shop.
